Let this story serve as yet another potent reminder that HR is not really there to defend employees at all. They are there to enforce arbitrary rules when it best suits the company and those at the top of the corporate hierarchy. Most employees are vaguely aware of this in theory, but when HR displays this kind of audacity in such egregious circumstances, it's hard to keep your head down and continue to work in such a messy place.
